Oil change shops

Why the hell can't they take the time to make sure your filter is screwed on tight enough and that your oil plug won't fall out??????


A few nites ago Alex and I were riding in his 2001 Jetta. He made a turn and his oil light came on...and you know its bad news when that happens. So he pulled the car over and pulled out his dipstick....hardly anything on it. After further examination, there is oil and gunk all over the engine and nice ugly coating of it down on where the air dam comes off the bumper (best way I can describe it) and all over the power steering rack....fuckers didn't screw on the filter right and 1/4 of a turn more and the thing would have fallen off.

Is there any reason anyone can't make sure the job is done right while they are working on it?

Well, I for one don't trust others to work on my car. For that reason alone.

exactly, the only solution to this is to change your own oil, saves you 20 bucks every 3 months too

True true, most of the time we change our own oil, but this was one of those times where it was just easier to stick it in the shop with work, holidays and too much other stuff to do and not enough time <sigh> I am glad the holidays are pretty much done as far as stress factor goes

I'd be taking the car back and asking WTF is going on.

I took my G20 into a Valvoline where they also top off your wiper fluid, etc... Well, they freaking over-inflated my tires by 2psi!

Granted, it isn't much, but it pissed me off...

I've heard too many stories about how the drain plug was cross-threaded when they put it back in. You won't find out about that until the next time...

You're lucky. I usually keep my tires around 40 psi. Last time I took my car to a place I said DO NOT TOUCH the tires. Riding home my car felt sluggish. I checked the tires......28 psi. $#&#58#'s deflated my tires.

I have a friend with an Acura CL and he took it up to the dealer to get some work done and to get the oil changed while they were at it. Later on that week he had is car up at his dad's shop and noticed the oil filter that he had put on his self from the last oil change was still on there, so he pulled the dip stick and sure enough the oil was black as coal they hadn't even changed it. He took the car back up there to bitch at the manager who got the service kid ( he was like 17 or something ) to come out and look at it, the kid basicly called my friend a liar to his face so my friend pulls out the dip stick slinging black oil all over the kid and the manager and proceded to verbaly abuse them untill he proved his point. The manager asked what he could do and my friend told him to fire the kid and fix his car, the manager turned around and told the kid he was fired and gave my friend a voucher for a bunch of free oil changes and refunded his money. All and all it was quite amusing to see.

When I take my car to these places I get out and watch them do the work. Especially on the turbo charged cars, those filters have to be primed before they are put on and I want to visaully verify that they are doing that.

You should've omitted the "do not touch my tires", they just wanted to see that look on your face when you discovered the 28psi reading

Problem was that they didn't make all the tires even. They raised the driver rear tire to 34psi and the passenger rear to 33psi and left the other two at 32 or below... And my front passenger tire was wearing funny on the outer tread, and I suspect that even that little bit of difference allowed the tread to continue to wear improperly. I ended up finding the steel belt peaking through!!! Thank goodness it was time for snowtires anyway!
