Opinions on Suburban Sound Systems

I have a 95 Suburban LT with the Premium sound system option. I was thinking about putting better speakers like say 6.5 3 ways in all the doors, and 4X10 3 ways in the back. Then the guy at Best Buy told me that if I really wanted better sound, that I should consider ditching the Delco, and adding a 300 watt amp. I asked him if I could just keep the Delco, and add the amp, he said I couldn't. So I was just wondering what your opinions are about the Delco Stereo. Should I just buy the speakers only, or should I buy the speakers, and ditch the Delco.
And if so what should I go for? A Rockford Fosgate amp, and one of those in-dash video decks? I don't know much about stereos except that mine doesn't sound very good compared to my friends kenwood with 2 12 inch subs.

Thanks,
jeff

I had a 92 Suburban and I put in a Phoenix Gold 6 channel 600 watt amp, Pioneer stereo, single 12 sub and Phoenix Gold speakers all around. It was a kick ass stereo, in fact I pulled the amp, sub and swapped for a lower quality stereo when I sold it.
I think you are likely to find that the Delco speakers will either fry or you'll find out they are jacked up and you don't realize it when you put the extra power on them from an amp. You can do it incrementally, but if you want really good sound, do the whole system.

hows this,

i work at best buy, and i own a 95 burb. (crazy huh?) i just dropped a system in. ill give you some pointers. ditch everything stock!

that being said, the rest is up to your budget. the 4x10's in back will suck regardless, its a terrible speaker design. the pioneer ones will work ok as a replacement. the 6.5's can be replaced with whatever you can afford and think sounds nice. you dont need an amp. anyone that says you do is a moron. if you can crank a 50wattx4 system in a burb and tell me its not loud enough, you need hearing aides. if you want subs, then you will NEED an amp. again all this depends on your budget.

the most important thing you pick out is the head unit (cd player) pick out one that has mp3 support, and has preouts for subs with all the adjustments and crossovers built in. (the pioneer 7500 is a nice one) if you can affordin dash dvd, go for it!

lemme know what you decide.

Re: Re: Opinions on Suburban Sound Systems

I just bought a 93. I need to replace everything. When I replace the head unit, does the new one go right in where the old one was or over in the slot where the tape player is? What kind of adapter is needed and how expensive is it?

on a 93 you need a spacer that will make the head unit stick out about 1.5 inches. it will go in where the tape deck is. you will also have to go to the dealer or the junkyard and get a "cubby hole" or filler plate to put where the radio controls are. my friend had it in his 88, and it doenst look too bad at all, just make sure the spacer is COLOR MATCHED to your interior. (in other words pay attention to color if you order the part online.)

Re: Opinions on Suburban Sound Systems

...go to your local dealership and get the cubby blueburbboober was talking about...or better yet use the stock housing for the lower cd player to be your mold; i made a bitchin' switchpanel. If i can find pics, i'll post 'em.

A word to the wise...DO NOT REPLACE THE REAR 4X10's with the same thing...instead get an adapter from sounddomain.com or something and put something decent there...4x10's only sound good if you're on a desert island alone with no other alternative...TRUST ME!
