Check Engine Light
I have a 98 tacoma 2.4 and the check engine light comes on after cruising on an open road for a while. I think there is a small crack in the exhaust manifold. Does anyone have the same prob?

I have a 98 Tacoma SR5 4x4 Kingcab and got that light "Check Engine" one time. But with that light, the truck suddently started shaking really bad for about a minute or two and it stopped. So what I did, I took the truck back to the Toyota Dealer. They did some diagnostics but they did not find anything wrong and said that it was just a false alarm. Since then, I have not seen that light or felt it shaking that bad. If I remember correctly, that was about 5 months ago since I got that light. Hopefully I won't get that light again.

Well it went away for no reason. I was driving in a parking lot and it went away. maybe i hit a speed bump. I don't know, but if I do a DA ill do it myself. Although you need a code reader and a code book i know where to get a OBDII reader for $40 and i am sure its not hard to get a code book. The dealer wants like $100 a shot.

Re: Check Engine Light
if you have a Palm OS PDA, you can also get a software/hardware solution (google odb ii palm, from 200 - 400 $) that will show codes, run real time parameters, and perform chassis dyno charting. they look pretty sweet, but i dont have it yet.

Re: Check Engine Light
The shaking would not come from the gas cap. The dealer had to have read a code. Every time that a code is read on the comp it stores it until it has been manually cleared.

Re: Check Engine Light
Try disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the whole system. This has worked for me several times with different modifications I have made that initially "confused" the computer.

Re: Check Engine Light
also I just recently read that Toyota has had problems with MAF sensors. This will cause the shaking being described. The replacement part is about $150 and less than an hour for install. Also, simply cleaning the sensor has helped in half of the cases.

Re: Check Engine Light
I just had the same thing happen to me... Dealer found it to be the MAF sensor... I took it out and cleaned it but the light stayed on. Went back and had the dealer clear the code and no more check engine light so I guess cleaning worked.
