Noah's Ark

While watching my Monster Garage for a special on the Discovery Channel tonite, which is a scientific analysis of the story of Noah's Ark. Whenever I think of that story, I just laugh at its lunacy. Do Christians really believe in that story?

The same goes for the books of Genesis, or the poem Paradise Lost. A very epic and very cool story, but come on, it just reeks of fiction. You might as well believe in Greek Mythology.

I don't want to offend any religions, but how can you believe in these stories? I'm just too much of a realist to grasp the concept of Seraphims and Forbidden Fruit and Pandemonium.

I agree with you there very much so. People often ask me why I do not believe in mass religions or why I do not believe in the bible. It all comes down to the fact that you really can't believe everything you read. Why should I live my life according to a book written so long ago.

To me its nothing more than one big story that was created as many childrens books are to give moral lessons. Also many of the idea's discussed in the bible have nothing to do with modern society. The bible says I can own slaves, but obviously I cannot nor would I want to.

Your idea on Greek Mythology hits the nail right on the head. I've tried this comparison may times, yet the end result is another argument, you won't convince anyone of your idea's or vice versa. It all comes down to we can all believe in want we want to, and everyone has to accept that.

Re: Noah's Ark

Science has proven there were large floods around that time in history for reasons that escape me (Not God's wrath). It is believed that these occurrences where the basis for the Bible equivalent story. I think everything in the Bible has a foundation in actual fact- these happenings and their significance have just been "tweaked" to suit the religion. This has no real bearing, however on the relevance of the Bible's message. The story/metaphor may be bogus factually, but don't let that divert your attention from the moral...whatever it may be. Don't interpret Bible stories so literally.

There is a bit of reverse archeology in the Bible. Scientests have theorized that there was landslide and subsequent flood on the south side of the Caspian Sea that might be the basis for the biblical flood.
However, there have been many floods in history so who can be sure.

This bible provides many moral lessons for people. Sadly, so many people do take it literally and have interperted it as moral justification for whatever they have chosen to do and/ or inflict upon others.
This is what makes the bible a tool for evil people throughout history.

Re: Noah's Ark

As you all know I hate religion and don't believe in a god, but I will say that some do have some basic moral rules that make sense and can be lived by all.
"Thou shalt not kill" is an example. Well duh, you shouldn't kill other people. Be we knew that already.

Re: Noah's Ark

I think we can all agree that the bible contains some good moral lessons. But its the fact of how the bible is taken and accepted as the only true word of how to live your life. Also how the bible is used as a weapon to defend what they have done, and what they can be forgiven of. As a non-church going person whatever I do is upon myself. However they can sin and sin and sin, and than go to church and all is forgiven.

So I will go to "hell" because I sinned, but they will go to "heaven" because they sinned but than confessed and prayed for their forgiveness, seems like something here isn't right. We both sinned, yet they are forgiven, and I am destined for hell.

Re: Noah's Ark

There was a flood that scientist theorize about? When did this so called flood take place? How big was this so called flood that science says there was? I think it's just science fiction. Just a bunch of fairy tales that science has made up.

Re: Noah's Ark

Well, a flood covering the entire Earth would dramatically change the atmosphere. There would be so much moisture in the air, you would drown by breathing in air.

On the special last night, they said there might have been a huge flood that cover most of Mesopotamia (earliest civilizations) from the Euphrates to the Caspien Sea. They said that might be where the story of Noah originated.

DGB, perhaps you have not caught on..........
Its not science fiction as you describe.
Science is being used as a way of supporting the biblical stories, NOT discounting them.
Your scorn is not deserved.

Re: Noah's Ark

I caught on years ago. Possibly you haven't been reading all of my posts completely. I'm a strong believer in science. Science has given more evidence about the accuracy of the scriptures than I could ever hope of doing.
