Transmission of '94 F-150

I have been having some problems with the transmission of my '94 F-150. I have just had the clutch and slave cylinder replaced, but now it's having troubles catching the gears again. It seems that all off the odd gears (1,3,5) just aren't catching right. What could this be?? Why only the gears on top of shifter?? I don't want to get yanked around anymore by my mechanic, I just had to shell out $800 into having it fixed, and it's still not working right . Any info would be much appreciated.

I'd take it back to the mechanic, It could be not quite lined right. But 800 dollars should carry a warrenty! Good luck BlondeCutie...

So you brought it to this "mechanic" telling them about the 1,3,5 no-shift and they replaced the CLUTCH?!?!?!?!?

The "mechanic" is an IDIOT if that is what happened. The TRANSMISSION needs to come out because there is excessive internal play that is preventing you from shifting into 1,3,5 like you should. There is NO way around that.

I would take it to a Ford shop, let THEM diagnose it, then go back after the "mechanic" that wrongly replaced the clutch and clutch cylinder and DEMAND a full refund!

MODMECH is right! If your clutch was bad all gears would have problems of some sort. After you get your refund, find another mech.

This was not the original problem. The original problem was inability to shift into wany gear while engine is running, and the clutch pedal felt soft. If the engine wasn't running, you could put it into any gear then start the truck in that gear. They said problem was with the slave cylinder, and they replaced the clutch too since they we're dropping the transmission anyway. I have a warranty on the work they did, so I just dropped it off at the shop for them to look at.

The mechanic now says there was a pin that fell out and he is replacing it, does this seem reasonable for the problems I am having? All the work he's doing now is covered under the warranty of first repair, but obviously I have lost faith in his abilities / knowledge, so I want to know if there might be something wrong, besides his incompetence, that is leading to all these problems. Do I have any recourse to take for having to bring this back for additional repairs? Should he refund me some of the money because he F'd up?

Actually a pin falling out would not have me think my mechanic is a incompetent. Honestly shi* happens, and he is willing and ready to fix it again. Think of it this way, he has to take the tranny out at his own cost, believe me, thats punishment enough. Be glad he admitted to it and is fixing it. Good luck!!

Ahhh, OK I mis-understood. Then the mechanic DID diagnose it correctly. And yes, a pin falling out can cause shift issues in one direction only as you found.

Ok .... so my mechanic didn't put one of the pins that holds the shift tower back in properly when he originally fixed it. The pin got chewed up a bit, and made it so I couldn't get into the odd gears. He replaced the pin, but says there is also wear on the opposite pin. He recommends that I take it to a transmission shop for them to replace the whole Shift tower. It's running fine now, so i am not really wanting to jump right in with another multiple hundred dollar repair. Could the wear on the opposite pin be due to the incorrect placement of the first pin? Or is there some other problem that could cause these pins to wear so much? How much should I worry about wear on the other pin? Is this something that could cause further problems if I don't get it fixed right away?

Well if you want to wait and see, that's certainly an option, and one that I would choose. If it does get to be a problem (shifting into R,2,4), you'll know what's wrong.
