ok...heres my problem.
so far (in two days) i've gotten most of the shifting down...i'm gaining alot more confidence coming out from a full stop without stalling. heres my question... when at a red light, which is less damaging: clutch in, tranny in 1st OR clutch out and tranny in neutral?? thx alot |

whenever you're at a stop like that, its better for your car and your leg
to leave it in neutral with the clutch out.

the more you use it, the more it wears. why waste energy by having to hold both clutch in when you're not moving? only use it to shift

Re: still learning manual...help!!!
thanks guys :-D
i was already noticing my legs were much more tired after a 7 hour shift at Publix (supermarket). I keep learning more about this thing every day. I already surprised my brother and friends by learning how to drive stick in 2 days after never touching a stick car in my life. my car is also much happier now that i'm wasting less clutch and not killing the brakes (i used to clutch everytime i used the brakes) oops my mom is rethinking the lecture she gave me on the "stupidity" of buying a stick car and that it was better to go with the automatic (eek!) she still thinks i'm just putting myself through unneccesary hassle...but then again, she bought an automatic 2003 toyota corolla that to me, behaved only slighty better than my old aerostar van. |

Re: still learning manual...help!!!
yea it definately is a better idea to keep your car in neutral at a stop light especially if you are first in line, not only is it less wear on the clutch but if someone bumps you accidentally from behind youll be out in the middle of the street and most likely it woudl have caught you off guard and you foot would have let off the cltuch and youd be out in the street stalled out, however if you were in neutral youd be out in the street but rather htan having to restart you can just put into first or reverse and get outta harms way
