Re: Mis-shifted

not tryin to flame or piss ya off, but thats why you dont let your friends drive your car, no one ever drives my car nor will they ever, its better to crash were you drank. but it sounds like you have a blown motor.

you see, what happened was your friend was prolly hitting around 4k in the rpm range when he down shifted to 2nd from fifth.

so you were going about 80 when he went into second. now just think about when your in second gear driving. how hard would it be for the engine to get to 80 in second gear? you would prolly have to hit 12k rpms. well thats what you forced the engine into doing.

a number of things could have happened. whatever it is, they will find out once they take the engine head off. your lucky you even got it started again, cause i bet your pistons look like golf balls.

sorry to say, you learn from your mistakes...you just have to hope they arent expensive. in your case, they are.

My buddy did the same thing in his eclipse last year. except he was already had 4000/4500rpm in 5th and wow you should of seen the internals of his motor. timming belt slipped and valves went through the pistons, valves broke off and put holes all through his cylinder head and his block was done unless he was to resleeve it. his didnt start back up lol. He had a autometer 10,000rpm tach and he said he seen it go right past that and kept going. oh well yours isnt this servear but it does sound like you may need to do a rebuild

good luck
Kyle

Re: Mis-shifted

No one drives any car of mine - except me, and all my friends don't even bother to ask - they already know what the answer is.

Re: Mis-shifted

Actually I take that back - I teach hot chicks how to drive stick in my car out in the country (not a sexual joke - sometimes I get layed - other times I don't). Some female friends of mine asked me if I could take them out to teach them how to drive a 5 speed - and I can't say no to a pretty face.

Re: Mis-shifted

Your car's been at the mechanic's for a WEEK, and they can't figure out what's wrong with it?! Time to take it to a different mechanic. I wouldn't even pay em if they didn't tell you something you didn't know before.

You could have a blown headgasket, burned a piston or valve.

A piston could have hit a valve, as valves will float at higher RPM's than the V-springs are rated for.

You may have spun a rod bearing, and that may not be immediately apparent to a mechanic.

Maybe your timing belt stretched and jumped a tooth.

You might even check your ignition timing to see if your distributor somehow came loose and threw your timing out of whack.

As for drunk driving, I'd rather have my friend blow up my motor than hit and kill someone's family. People that think they can drive fine while they're drunk are fuckin retarded, and ought to be shot.

On the other hand, I sure as hell wouldn't let him RACE my car. Racing is hard enough on the engine. Someone racing a car they're not familiar with, is just a hazard.

Re: Mis-shifted

im assuming this though...

if youre fortunate enough to come by a 2001 lude, which im SURE set you back more than $14,000...
youre probably going to find the means to come by another 2-3K for a rebuild (maybe more, maybe less, im not all that sure). Plus...try to get your friend to hook you up with a bit of money, a few hundred even, anything helps...either way good luck.

Re: Mis-shifted

I'd tell the guy you can either pay me the money or pay money to the hospital when you need to have your nose reconstructed... its that simple.

but I am glad at least some people feel drunk driving is WRONG

Re: Mis-shifted

If any of yall thought i was implying driving drunk i wasnt, i meant crashing, as in sleeping at the place he drank. Drunk driving is wrong and retarded. if no one intended to say that, i appologize

Re: Mis-shifted

exactly why are you even worried about it. If he was your friend at all, he would be a man and take the bill for fucking up your engine.
