gear slippage?

i ahve an 87 nova 5speed. in first gear it slips now, and i have to wait a bit and rev it a bit and figure out whats goign on before it gets all regrouped again. its usually when im turning, i almost got hit by a truck. wierd thing is, when it slips, the car revs... and the speedometer goes as if the tires were slipping. (like a tach with the revs) any ideas? i need to get this fixed.
