Key ingition switch

I have a 93 Voyager that seems to have a bad ignition key switch. It went out all of a sudden. It seems very loose and sloppy from the off to the on /start positon. I do hear the fuel pump getting power but nothing at the starter. I pull the starter out and had it checked, it's fine. I then checked at the wire using a volt meter and hitting the energizer wire and the other one to ground while my son turn the key to the on postion, nothing. So I'm assuming the switch is bad and I'm wondering if I can safely jump the starter to get it to the dealer so the switch can be replaced. Can I jump the energizer wire to the + red positve lead with the switch on the on position just to get it started?

Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks,

Walt

Wink Re: Key ingition switch

Yes. Jumper the starter with the key all the way to start and drive it to a repair shop to get the key cylinder changed. It is a common defect.

Thanks, got the van hot wired and it started on the 1st attempt. Drove it to my mechanic who replaced the key cylinder, now I have 2 keys but I had cars back in the 70's with a door key and an ignition key so no big deal. My mechanic showed me the cylinder and the metal ring that drives the switch broke off so no way to fix it, just replace.

Thanks again, better to happen at home then on the road somewhere so I was lucky I guess.

That is the only disadvantage of replacing the key cylinder. A locksmith can reset the tumblers to match the old one, but it will cost you $50 to $75. I am living with two keys, myself.

key core replacement

It cost me $89.57 for parts and labor, just glad it didn't happen to one of my kids when driving it out of town.

How exactly did you jumper the the starter? I have the molding removed from my steering column. Do I leave the jumper wire on, and turn the key? Never hotwired a car before. Please help!!!
