2K SunfireSE Few help questions...

First off I'm trying to get new speakers installed into my car. I have the haynes book but oddly enough I'm still not able to lift the back panel up far enough where I can slip the speakers in and out safely. Any help would be great, tried to find help online but couldn't pull up much.

Second is a minor problem thats annoying. I know Pontiac has had problems with the ignition systems but nothing for the 2000 models have been said. Currently in my car if I sit in traffic for to long smoke will come out of the steering column. Nothing, from what I can tell, is being effected as far as performance in turning, starting, and what not. No lights flashing either. It comes up from the sides and from the switch with the emergebcy flashers are at. Someone said it may be a wire thats just getting a bit hot and falls on plastic and burning it. Just thoughts on that one...

Thanks

Re: 2K SunfireSE Few help questions...

The back panel can simply be pulled out easily... just lower the back seat, pull the little plastic pins out, and lift and give a gentle tug, you may have to wiggle it around a bit but it will come out and go back in without problems.. I recently done it myself.. You may also want to reinforce the speaker brackets so you wont get any rattles...
Secondly... the whole smoking from the steering column, I'd advise you to get it checked by a professional, I've never heard of such a thing happening but it sounds serious, not minor.. just be safe and get it checked... Hope this all helps

Already took it to the professional mechanic I normally go to. He just didn't want to get inside the column cause he was afraid it'd bust the air bag open if something happened wrong. SO have to wait to raise the money for the actual Dealership.

Thanks for the help on the speakers Didn't realize it just needed a stupid tugging. Thanks agian thou!

GM has a recall out with the 2000 sunfire. A low voltage igniton switch needs to be installed. It's free.

its easier to get the rear lid off the speakers if you take the upper trim off from around the door's as well, makes it easier

as for your ignition, groovie is right, i went in for a recal about a low generator voltage signal from my alternator and they told me of the recall for the ignition, it can catch fire. So i spent 3 hours with them fixin git for me for free. i would just go to your pontiac dealer

I agree also about the ignition recall. We had our 2000 done this week.

Register your car with https://www.mygmlink.com/main/US/en/gm/home and they will send you a recall email if it has not been done.

If you bought the car used you will have to fax them the bill of sale or your insurance card to get the car registered. I did and everything was set up in a couple of days.
