1991 Ford Ranger 4.0 Check Engine Light

Can someone provide a list of items that will cause the Check Engine Light to come on?

check engine light

hi there.
hope this is of use.
the check engine warning is as far as i know just another oil warning device, this works like a float when your oil level is correct the float doesn't make a contact but when the level drops the float makes contact and completes a circuit. the usual cause is either the float is stuck or the unit has developed a fault. the unit is on the side of the sump and is undone with a spanner, (be sure to drain some oil or it,ll spill onto road through the apperture.
hopr this helps any probs don't hessitate to e-mail me, will gladly try to help with anyother info.

No, it has nothing to do with the oil level. It is specifically computer controlled items. Mostly emissions equipment. It may be the Oxygen Sensor, or the Mass Airflow Sensor, or anything. It could be a number of things. If you have an Autozone near you, they will pull codes for you for free. They cannot tell you exactly what is causing it, but they can narrow it down for you and they will print you a list of things to check and try. Using their list you can find out what is throwing the check engine light.

That is the long way to do it. The quick way to do it, is to take it to the Ford Dealer and pay them to pull the codes. It will cost a little, but you will fix it quicker. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The check engine light is on in both of my vehicles and I haven't figured it out yet.

When ya get the codes pulled, come back and let us know what they said, maybe someone can shed a little more light.
