WRX Going from 16" to 19" wheel, will offset from 55mm to 35 mm work?

My son has bought some AXISS rims 19" x 8" to replace the stock 16" x 6.5" rims. He boght them without checking if the offset of the new wheels will work. He has also bought Yokohama parada Spec 2 225/35 19" tires to go on the rims. The new rims are 19 x 8 with an offset of 35mm. The original wheels have a 55mm offest- so he tells me. The place he bought the rims from told him that the 35mm offset will work perfectly but I am not sure.

Can anyone tell me if this will work and if there will be any problems with doing this? Rub? Camber, etc? I am not an expert and could use a lot of advice on this.

Thanks a lot

The most likely problem will be rubbing.
Consider this, he has a wheel that has 3/4 inch less offset than the stock wheels, but that is 1-1/2 inches wider than the stock wheels.
By the math, he's moving the inside edge of the wheel 2-1/4 inches inboard, this will especially be a problem with the front wheels when he steers the car.

He could try to get a 20mm spacer plate and longer lugs but that's not exactly an ideal condition, he should get wheels with the correct offset rather.

Wheel size and camber adjustment aren't related.

I am not sure your calculation is correct because when I laid it out on a piece of paper for both rim widths, I added 3/4 of an inch to either side to get to 8", then I drew the centerlines for both the 6.5 and the 8 and then I did the offset from the centerline of each rim and the actual distance from the original offset to the new offset was about 1/8 of an inch , and if I am correct in what I calculated, that would put the inside rim edge about 7/8 of an inch further in from the original. Does that sound like I did it correctly? I could, of course be all wet and completrly wrong here also.
Thanks for replying

I think you're correct and I am wrong, I will do some checking and get back to you.

The lower the number the farther the distance out from the hub. Those wheels will most likely stick out from the fenders a lot.

I don't know whether or not they will fit. That depends on a lot of factors, including whether it's a sedan or wagon etc., but even if they do fit there may be long term wear issues with the bearings and so on. Check the Tire and Rims forum at NASIOC.com.

Got them on- what a mess

Well, We finally got the wheels and rims on. Four things are wrong- the rims are actually labelled "XENEX" rims, so I think we were sold a Axis knockoff unless XENEX is an Axxis name, When they installed the tires on the rims, the machine broke the little edge rim around the hub on two of the wheels because the little rim was so thin in that area, the offset is actually 30 mm , not the 35 we were told when we bought them and the wheels and tires stick out so much that they rub against the body fenders, especially in the rear, when you have four people in the car.

No my question becomes can I ditch the rims, keep the 19 inch tires and get new rims that are offset the correct amount 45 to 48 mm, and will they fit and not rub? My son's insistence on the above combo has caused me a lot of grief and I am going to let him buy himself out of this mess all by his lonesome. Although the one nice thing is that the wheels and rims do look awesome even if the car is undriveable.

Any ideas if this will work?

I don't think you would have any problem at all with the right offset.

One more thing. You need to get me some pics. I would love to see what it looks like.
