These units get a bad rap since most of the problem is that it is not well understood. The choke blade is closed by a bi-metallic spring in the housing. When the spring cools, it contracts, pulling the blade closed by the linkage. When the cold engine is started, the vacuum break, or chokd pull-offoperated by manifold vacuum, retracts, partially opening the choke, and allowing the cold engine to breathe. As the coil warms, the choke opens, further leaning the mixture, and allowing the engine idle to gradually drop toward normal idle. The current necessary to warm the coil comes from the ignition switch circuit. When the engine starts, oil pressure rises, closing the switch, and allowing the full current to warm the coil. Another circuit, a prove-out circuit, operates the choke light. Current flows from the ignition switch, through the light to the choke coil, which provides a path to ground, for the light. When the oil pressure rises, full battery voltage is applied to the coil, warming the coil and, since there is voltage now on both sides of the choke light, the light extinguishes. Now to your problem. Which part of this scenario does your car not do? Having an understanding of the problem will allow me to assist with a repair. Also, never lubricate a linkage. Simply clean it with carb cleaner, and be sure it is free to move. Lubrication tends to attract dirt, increasing the chance of the linkage binding. Please get back to me. Ray

Re: need carb help ('84 Z28)
mine just seems like sometimes the car is doing whatever it does to keep the idle up when its cold after its warmed up and the car idles about double what it should. If I cut it off in neutral while its doing this sometimes it will diesel. It seems like its been improving since I cleaned it all and wd40'd it. Any ideas ??? I had no idea all that stuff happened to work the choke.
