jetta battery/replacement issue Dealer Rip-off?
Took the 94 Jetta to a dealer (big mistake) because it died. Dealer determined that it was a dead battery and replaced it - $110 for the BAttery and $150 for the labor (2 hours). I thought this was a joke or theft. He claimed that when the battery goes, they had to reset the computer and the radio. Can this be for real? Does it really take 2 hours? Lots of people wake up on a cold morning, find the battery dead and go out and buy a replacement and then drive their cars off. So why was this other stuff necessary - or was it?
Was I ripped off? |

it was necessary but it would not take 2 hours. whenever i did work on my 94 GTI i had to disconnect the battery, its not big deal... yes, i would say you were taken. Fight the man.

I had a similar question/experience. I don't think you got scammed but you did pay too much.

Re: jetta battery/replacement issue Dealer Rip-off?
I just replaced the battery and reset the radio and clock on my '95 Passat in about 10-15 minutes. It's easy if you know at all what you're doing. Theres no way a VW mechanic should take 2 hours for this. GOUGERS. Mike.

They obviously know you are coming before you get there and are waiting for your wallet. Your biggest mistake is going there in the first place. Find a local mechanic that a friend or someone else recomends. (that is good) preferably a VW/Audi/Porche specialist. GO that route. That is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard.

sounds like they charged you inflated price on battery...
time to take it out and in... check and charge new one... resetting the radio,(by resetting your code or looking it up in their system, instead of looking in your book or asking you.) and alot more. I WOULD DEFINATLY FIGHT THIS... don't go back there again... have a friend go with you who knows what they are talking about. |

If you bought the car new the dealer should have provided you with the security code for the radio and how to reset it. Had to reset the computer is BS, it resets itself when you reconnect the battery. If the car has an alarm you need to turn the ignition key to the on mode then connect the battery. I'd ask for a refund, 2 hrs to install a new battery would get a tech fired in my shop.
