96 Jetta Starter Replacement Issues

I recently replaced the starter in my 96 jetta. Upon removal I found no shims. After replacing with a reman the car will start, but the starter will not disengauge and it continues to spin. Tried shimming it and lubrication but still the same symptom. Please help.

When you replaced the starter, did you remove the bronze/brass bushing and replace with the new bushing in the kit? This aligns the starter drive gear. If worn may cause the starter to hang-up

Thank you very much for your reply. I took the starter back out and old bushing is still there... but I certainly can't get it out. It doesn't look worn...but who knows. Any suggestions on how to get it out of there would be greatly appreciated.

Screwdriver or small chisel & break it into pieces.
