95 Bonneville check engine light

I have a 95 Bonne SLE 3.8 Series II with 73k miles and I am getting an intermittent check engine light, but no symptoms. Does anyone know how to check the ALDL connector for the codes? It is an OBD1 w/16 pin connector. It only has 6 pins. Can I use a jumper wire on this? Any advise appreciated. Dave

No way of doing this with a jumper pin. Do you have a Autozone or Advanceauto close to you. They will extract codes for you free of charge, makes good business sense beings you'll most likely buy the part needed from them.

Re: 95 Bonneville check engine light

I have read online about using a jumper wire to
read the codes on the dash. Is it different for a
95 Bonneville? Is a code reader the only way to
get the codes? I don't have an Autozone in my
area. Does any other stores offer this service?
I need to get this checked ASAP because the
light is coming on more often now.
Thanks for the reply

95 was the first year that Gm started the transformation to OBD2...with the DLC you describe, the only way to pull codes is with the use of a code checker or scanner

GMMERLIN is right, but actually they started the transition in 94 (I have one) which was a hybrid year with the OBDII connector and a OBDI system. a real pain in the butt cause you have to get an adaptor for your OBDI scanner. I have heard of rumor of early 95's like this as well, but have never seen one. You can pick them up on EBAY, or check your local parts store. The price you pay for one easily payoff with 2 trips to a garage having them "check it out" for ya. If your going to work on it yourself (whenever possible), your hands will be tied without one.

Re: 95 Bonneville check engine light

I must have one of these 95 Bonnies with the OBDII
connector and an OBDI system. It says OBDI certified on the Emissions sticker under the hood.
The connector is a 16 pin version. I also have a 92
SSE and that car has a 12 pin connector. Is this
correct?

That is correct. The only bad part is, you'll have to invest in a scanner you can use on it (www.actron.com) or find someone (parts store) that "knows" about these hybrid years, and can read the codes for you. If not, you'll need to take it in, and have a garage do it, the "only" disadvantage to that is you'll pay for it.

Re: 95 Bonneville check engine light

Is it possible that a new EGR valve from GM is still
causing the check engine light to light up while
driving? I get the exact same results when I re-
checked the codes. I also checked the connections
to the ignition module and PCM- everything looks
good. It is the same as before- no symptoms while
driving except the check engine light. I am confused
any help appreciated. Thank You

Re: 95 Bonneville check engine light

I finally got fed up with this check engine light and
took the car to the dealer. It turns out that the
PCM was causing the light to trip. A new PCM and
all is well again. I was a bit surprised at the failure,
but the dealer said it is fairly common in a car that
is 10 years old in the area I live there are a lot of
temperature extremes that electronics doesn't like.
Thanks for all the input and help to try to solve this problem.
