88 S-10 Fuel Tank

I had a fuel leak from the top of the pump in my 88, 5 speed. In tank pump, only leaked under pressure. I dropped the tank and replaced the hoses. My problem is, I have an extra wire laying around. It was bolted to the frame but I have no idea where it originated. I have no fuel guage reading and can't tell is the pump is running. Ideas?

Re: 88 S-10 Fuel Tank

Ok first off, this wire, you said "it was bolted to the frame" and you "don't know where it origionated", didn't it come from the frame like you said? if it did and you just can't find the hole, just make a new one....this is likely your ground wire for your fuel pump/sender....secondly, you said you "can't tell if the fuel pump is running" so your truck won't start now or?? if it won't start then i would definitly say the wire is your ground source. So basically this is what i would do....attach the wire to the frame (if one end is currently attached to the pump) i had a blazer and i did replace the tank once, i think all i remember is the plug that goes into the pump/sender unit and then it goes into a harness. So i may not have helped at all, i guess what i'm gettig at is that if your fuel gauge and pump are not working then it is likely the ground wire for the circuit, just attach it to either the frame or sender unit. Hope that did something for you, if not try and describe it better and i'll give it another go!

Re: 88 S-10 Fuel Tank

Thanks Rockie, I guess that didn't make as much sense as I thought.
The known is, it attaches to the frame, so it is a ground, bolt hole and bolt are fine.
The unknown is, where does it attach to the tank/pump assy? It's a bare ended wire, no connector on it so I don't know what kind of attachment I'm looking for. Is it a push on tab on the sender/pump?

mmm, not sure, the plug that goes onto the sender unit might be missing a wire, maybe got yanked out when removed? either way it's gonna have to be attached to the actual sender unit not just the tank.....can't think of anyhting else right now, i'll have a look and get back to ya.

Re: 88 S-10 Fuel Tank

If I remember the ground wire is crimped to the sender itself. If you didn't unhook it from the frame before you dropped the tank you probably ripped it off the sender.

Re: 88 S-10 Fuel Tank

On an '88, the harness has 2 wires. Those are okay. This is separate from the harness, straight from the frame to (?) somewhere on the sender from what you're saying.
It now sounds like I'll have to drop the tank again to find where it goes. I was hoping not to do that. I appreciate your input. Any other information you can find will be welcome as well.

The diagram shows tan\white going to tan, power
source to the pump from the relay. thence pink back to the inst. panel. It does not show a ground
around the pump. I think you did lose the connector
on the end of that wire.
