Is this a good price for a gear change "kit"?
Hey guys, I'm doing a gear install this spring. I'm wondering what ya think about this price for an entire gear swap "kit".
-Strange Pro Street 3.73 or 4.10 Gears for #2 series carrier. -RATECH Complete Gear Installation Kit -2 Quarts RED LINE Synthetic Gear Oil -1 Bottle GM Limited Slip Differential Additive -TA Performance Rear End Cover Girdle -TA Performance Stud Kit $435 + shipping... I'll prolly end up buying an axle bearing kit while I'm at it, but that's only another $35 or so... I'm still debating on 3.73's or 4.10's. I want to feel that nasty launch from the 4.10's but I'm not sure how quickly I'll run out of gears. I've gone through a few calculator things and it looks like I could get to about 105-110mph in 3rd, and up to bout 140ish in OD... If that's true, that is prolly plenty fast for me since I don't usually worry about topping the car out. I just like proving the point up to about 100mph or so. I'm also not worried about gas mileage. I didn't buy to car to use it as a DD, so the gas money isn't an issue. I know I'll prolly need some DR's or better tires for this setup, since it won't hold traction for shit, but I think it'll be fun as hell once I get some ET streets on the ho... Anyways, sorry for the long post. My main question is on how good that price sounds. I can get the gears by themselves for as low as about $200 + shipping, but I wouldn't mind having the stud kit and performance cover either and with them and the other stuff included, the price might be about right. Any opinions on what ratio to choose would also be welcome... BTW, I drive an A4 for those who don't know already... Thanks, Garrett |

i've never driven a car w/4:10's, but can imagine that if your wanting to launch pretty fast you'd better get some tires with more meat, or your just gonna spin. 3:73's are pretty decent on gas milage if you've got overdrive. The price sounds pretty decent, i think LSD's usually go for well over $300 brand new.

Re: Is this a good price for a gear change "kit"?
I've talked with a couple other friends offline in the meantime. I think I am going to buy that kit in about a month when I get $500 saved up.
I don't have the money right now cause I just bought myself a custom race prepped 3000 stall converter built to handle up to 700+ horsepower off ebay bout a half hour ago. I'll have to save up a couple paychecks and grab the gear kit... |

yeah man, that price is pretty good. gears alone normally cost around 200 bucks. i would pay the 435 for all that.

oh and you say it isnt a DD and you dont care about gas mileage, and are more interested in launch than mileage. so hell, go with the 4.10, if its too much, you can always put in 3.73 later

Gear slection should be decided on how much rpm you want to run and What size tires you plan to use.
