$900 good price for lowering gear parts and install?
As most of you know I am lower the gears in my Z. I have no idea how to do it so I am bringing it to a shop. anyway, he wants to charge me $900 for all the parts and labor... does this sound like he is ripping me off, or is it a pretty standard price.

$900 USD for parts and labour does sound steep - nevertheless, if its done correctly I wouldn't think its too far off the price! Be careful, theres not too many places that can install gears properly (even if they tell you they've got the right equipment).
I just got mine put in - cost me $220 CAD for 3.73 Strange, $180 USD for a new '02 Zexel-Torsen 3 series posi, $120 CAD for bearings and install kit, and $300 CAD labour. The gears whine a lot more than before and I can feel vibration at really high speeds (100 MPH+). I've already complained to the guys, who are actually great fellows and amazing engine builders - but I know now that rear ends are not their specialty. They will re&re again for a fee because they think the carrier I brought them is the problem (it works but technically its not for the '95s - ABS doesn't work anymore because they new '02 carrier has 4 ABS sensors or hookups whereas the old carrier had 3). Needless to say my chevy mechanic bros. has driven the car and we're going to make a weekend out of taking out the gears, painting them, installing them, taking them out to look at the wear pattern, then shim the differential accordingly so there is absolutely no gear whine. That stuff people tell you about aftermarket gears whining more than stock is bullshit - if its shimmed properly it will make no noise. Honestly, for the $300 CAD I paid these guys I wouldn't have expected them to go so far as to re&re twice with several road tests. Should have brought them to my friend from the start (would have cost less but gotten done months from now). You get what you pay for - find a shop with a SOLID reputation and let them do it. |

Re: $900 good price for lowering gear parts and install?
I bought my richmond 3.73's from jegs for 300 bones with the install kit. I only paid 150 for labor. There is no whine. My mechanic is a pro and a friend so he hooked me up. He set them pretty damn perfect cause like i said it doesn't whine.
