Hahaha! I just tried vegemite for the first time!

I was talking with a few Aussies on another forum and I decided I'd prove them all wrong and by not throwing up when trying vegemite for the first time.

I bought it at local Aussie shop for US$6.50. Expensive as hell.

This thing is thick as margarine. Smells like ass. Anyways, tried it on some toasted asiago cheese bread with butter. I put a very small amount, as one of them suggested.

Took my first bite...

And I must say, it's not that bad. For those familiar with South East Asian food, it tastes a little like shrimp paste, solid fish sauce, or soy sauce. Very salty and smells horrible.

I ended up eating 3 servings. Seems like Aussies live up to their criminal roots--the horror of vegemite is about as exaggerated as the legendary 'drop bears'.

Now I have an entire jar of vegemite to deal with... I'm not gonna be able to finish it all by myself.

Re: Hahaha! I just tried vegemite for the first time!

for giving it a go. I recommend it on medium toasted white bread with copious amounts of butter and about the same amount you look to have on there.

Yum!

Re: Hahaha! I just tried vegemite for the first time!

That reminds me... while in mexico I had these sandwichs that used a "sauce" that was kind of like bologna and mayanaise all squashed together. It was good.

Re: Re: Re: Hahaha! I just tried vegemite for the first time!

Its better than Marmite!

Vegemite is cool! I love it on white bread with a slice of colby or other hard mild cheese.

Its made from, I think, the remains of the yeast and hops from the bottom of the fermentation pots after brewing beer. At least thats where it orginaly came from, as to what its made from now I have no idea.

The trick is to remember to spread it only thinly.

(marmite is made from fermented beef/yeast extract, its really not pleasant)

Re: Hahaha! I just tried vegemite for the first time!

So, I'll be eating a lot more of this in the future. I gotta find some recipes to use up all this vegemite. I seriously cannot finish it all myself just on buttered toast alone...
