Spark plugs

hey, anyone change the plugs on 98-2002 v8 ss. The dealer wants three (3) hours labor ($200). I know its a little tight, but I would like to do myself.

Any hints?

You shouldn't have any problem changing them yourself in a couple hours. I've changed them on my LT1 before, and have heard it is a bit easier on an LS1. Just make sure ya have some extensions, possibly some swivel head ones, and be prepared for some scratched and bruised foreamrs and hands...

BTW, $200 is ridiculous for a plug change, if you are willing to pay that and are anywhere near PA/NY, I'll change um for $100...

Thanks. I try to do all my own work (belts, oil, etc).

I have recently hurt my back and that is the reason I was shopping around. They (dealers) were telling me you have to under the car. Looks to me that the back to left side are the tough ones.

Also, do the boots just pull of with a little turn?

Well, I can't speak from experience on the LS1's, but I just had to tug on mine to get them off. They aren't clipped on or anything, just fit snug over the plugs...

You might have to do a few plugs from underneath, but I don't see that being any worse, at least you'll save the stress on your back and legs by laying down and doing the work...

plugs on Fbodies are a pain the in the ass, but ya just have to be patient and take your time, they'll come out, I promise...

Also, I'm not sure what kind of a neighborhood you live in or anything, but if you are hurt and would still like to find someone to do the grunt work, I bet you could find a couple of the neighborhood teens or other car junkies who'd be happy to come over and tangle with it for a hundred bucks. I know I sure as hell would... lol... Then you could just supervise to ease your mind as to the quality of the work...

be careful with them plug wires. the only pain with them is that heat sheild on them, they have a habit of breaking off inside, and the plug wire, will pull right out of the boot. so make sure you put all your pulling force on the boot and not the wire. it also helps to twist them bak and forth as you pull on them. they should come off. and yes, it is much easier to get at the rear plugs from underneith, and yes, you will want extentions and swivels. hope you have a creeper and ramps for your back. good luck
