CAI Questions

Alright...I decided to go with a AEM CAI for christmas and have a couple questions

1. Can I do this upgrade myself (I can change my own oil, fuel, and normal air filters, is it similar to this or much harder?)

2. From the AEM catalog I could not find a specific application for a 1991 G20, should I look harder or do I use one for a different car w/ a sr20de engine?

3. What is the CHEAPEST place to get an AEM intake??

4. In the attached pic I highlighted the area where the cai tube goes behind the battery, where does it go from there?

Thanks for your time, Russ

To my knowledge, it shouldn't be hard at all. You just remove the stock AI box and attach the CAI. In the pic and pretty much any other CAI, it's gonna go straight down from there. There may be some cutting at the bottom of the engine bay, but not too sure with P10's.

Yeah the filter just goes in the little space between the fender liner and the front bumper. You'll need to get a dremel or something to cut the sheet metal there.

The early SE-R AEM CAI might fit but I ordered the 99 SE-R CAI for my 99 G20 and it DID NOT fit. Just be prepared to either resell the CAI or cut it up to make it fit.

Has anyone tried this on the G20? I'd be curious to see how it worked out. Hell, i bet you could get a muffler shop to work you up something if you had an aftermarket CAI to use as a template. Might take a little work to fit the MAF sensor tho.

I havent tried making a CAI, but it looks promising, just get aluminium tubing, the steel will be very heavy. Just my two cents....

No need....Place Racing Inc. has the CAI already, comes in different colors if you want. Comes WITH cut out template for G20 and Altima. Comes with new hole gromett, MAF adapter, K&N open element filter and all hose connectors and fasteners. I don't recall if they make them for the high port, but I don't see why they wouldn't have them. All you have to do is remove everything (most importantly the resonator box), trace the template and cut out the hole. I used a dremel to cut between the drill holes I made. Works perfectly. BTW the filter will face straight down.

I would not recommend using "bendable" tubing to make a CAI. In order to make the tubing bendable, it is corrugated (like a bendable straw). Those "accordion bends" would be horrible for air flow. You'd cut down on restriction and get cooler air than the stock airbox, but the airflow inside your intake would not be laminar at all. Using mandrel-bent tubing would work because the inner wall of the tubing is kept smooth and kink-free. I was considering getting the hotshot but now i'm actually thinking about doing this myself. It would require some fabrication but i stand to save a couple hundred bucks with a DIY job.
