Can I upgrade the sound system of my 2000 Jetta?

Does anyone knows if I can install a Tape/Radio/1-CD player from a 2002 Jetta in my 2000 Jetta? I called the dealer and they told me that there isn't enough space, since the CDplayer is taller. But wouldn't removing the storage space above give me enough space? Is there any other technical reason why this is not recommended? The new system I want to install model number is: CQ-JV1061XB, and the one I have installed already is the basic Cassette/AM/FM player.
I would appreciate any help!
