Exclamation Turning in leased Jetta and being charged $500 to turn off the check engine light

I just had my car inspected after my lease was up on my Jetta. They are trying to charge me $500.00 to turn my check engine light off. When I took it into get serviced a few months ago the mechanic told me not to worry unless it was flashing. I chose to believe him and now I am being charged $500.00 just to turn it off! I can't believe how ridiculous this is and was wondering if anyone knows how I can turn it off myself.
Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you!

go to autozone. they'll check the codes and shut it off for free.

For $500 they're probably fixing something. Even if you take it somewhere to turn off the light they have the heads-up to re-check if you did the repair or not, and they will force you to make the repair before taking it. Find out what the problem is. Remember the most common Air Flow Sensor failure is now under warranty for 70K miles.

I was a service manager of a performance car lot. We were charged 50 bucks a pop to turn off the lights @ VW. If the battery goes dead, it comes on, ect. Check at another VW garage and see if they will turn out the light for a fee and quick turn it in for the lease. otherwise, Bosch is right about the sensor.. VERY common.
