Need Transmission Mount (I think)

OK Here is the senario

As I am driving down the road the transmission shifter bounces up and down with the terrain of the road. I really think its the transmission mount and if it is then should be easy to replace-however, nobody seems to have one. I checked with Auto Zone and they mentioned something about a 200+ dollar hydraulic system. I dont need that I hope.

Any way-any suggestions or advice I would highly appreciate.

Well I don't know much about 1st, 2nd, and 4rth gen camaro's but I do know that on the 3rd gens there isn't a transmition mount persay. There's a cross member at the end of the trany tail shaft that the trany just sits on. The only thing that is actualy connected to the trany is the driveshaft and the torque arm. But no trany mounts. I'm not sure if the other generations are the same, but if they are then you need to check that cross member to see if all the bolts are on tight. Also check your torque arm. There is going to be some movement of your shifter though, so if it's not real excessive then I wouldn't worry about it.

Your transmission if its a 3rd gen Camaro 82-92 will have a small crossmember near the rear of the transmission that the tranny sits on. Between the crossmember and the tranny there will be a small rubber mount.
If I remember correctly there should be two bolts holding it to the tranny and maybe one on the bottom holding bolted to the crossmember. This is the auto trans. . WHen I was at autozone we looked it up under "transmission mount" Cost was under $20.

I dont know if the 5 speed is the same. I am guessing you have the 5 speed since your shifter is moving. I would check motor mounts.

By the way when I had to replace mine I got it from Western Auto or Parts America or whatever its called now.

That cross member does have a rubber plate that the tranny sits on but there are no bolts that hold the tranny to it. I just took out the motor and trany in one of my camaros like two weeks ago. The cross member is only bolted to the frame.

This coming from someone who just before said there was no mount.


To the original message poster I suggest checking all mounts and making sure your torque arm bolts are tight in front and rear of arm. Other than that nothing else should make a shifter move that I can think of.

Ok, if you consider a rubber slab on a piece of formed steel a mount, then go for it. But there are no bolts physicly holding the trany to the frame, in my mind, and I've been doing this for about 7 years, if there are no bolts holding it in, it's not a mount. It's just a resting place. If that rubber slab is completly missing all together, it's not going to effect anything at all, I know, I've had that problem, or lack of a problem. You can also look in the haynes manual, they won't call it a mount either. And by the way, if your motor mount bolts where broken you would have a more noticable problem than just shifter travel. The first thing that would happen is the peices of bolts would work there way out due to the vibration, next thing that would happen is the motor would tilt slightly to the broken side, there is where the world of trouble is caused. So if you want to badger me make sure your not standing in three feet of water first.

No I don't go post to post looking at a manual. I do however consult the manual when needed. You should try it sometime, there pretty usefull. Lotsa good stuff in there. BTW, my buddy is sitting here, he's an ASE sertified mech at GM, he's getting a good laugh at you.
