engine mount and transmission mounts

1988 pontiac bonneville le
the engine mount and the 3 transmission mounts have to be changed.
went to 2 different garages and received 2 opinions how the job has to be done.
one said the cross member had to be removed.
the other said it was not necessary.
would anyone know the procedure on how to do it.
3.8 litre motor
thanks in advance for your help.

Re: engine mount and transmission mounts

I replaced the front trans mount on both my 90 and 93. It's actually a pretty quick job (20~30 min). All I did was support the engine with a floor jack and a piece of 3/4" plywood. Unbolt the old, bolt in the new.

I haven't had to deal with any other mounts but I don't think you'll have to drop the subframe. My service manual is at a buddy's house so I can take a look at it when I stop over. This will give the GM procedure which is usually the way to do things.
