Clicking noise when driving and i must put x in 4wd to stop it

Ok, here is the situation, I can be parked, go into reverse or I can just get into my x and start to drive and a clicking noise will start. The noise sounds like it is coming from the hub area or the transmission area. It's hard to determine since this only happens when I am driving the x. So, in order to make this go away, I will have to slow down to around 10 mph and the transmission(which I think is where this is happening) will shift the car from what seems to be out of 4h into 2h(this is when then shifter is in 2h mode though) so it actually feels like something is just slipping into place or I would have to slow down to 10 mph and then shift into 4h for only 1 to 2 seconds while driving and then back to 2h, and the noise stops until I stop and turn off the vehicle again and park. So this does't happen at stop signs or under any normal driving conditions, just after I park my x. I am now just hoping nothing is really fucked up. About 60,000 miles and in great condition. Don't offroad much but drive up to the mountains alot. If any other info is needed please, please ask. This is the first prob in 3 years of owning it. Year is a 2000 xe 6 banger 4-wheel

I would rule out a bad hub first (not uncommon and the easies/cheapest to fix). Have a friend stand next to each front wheel while you are in this situation and see if he can locate the noise. Ticking sounds like a hub that's broken and not disengaging.

Nice, I will check that out first. If I do take the hub off, will I be able to see where it is cracked? And how do you think it cracked in the first place? Thanks for the help, daniel

once you take off the hub body, there will be a second smaller part of the hub still attached to the half shaft. use a pair of good snap ring pilers and pop the snap ring off. you can then pull the hub internals off of the half shaft. there are some plastic pieces in the hub guts that might be cracked or broken. good luck
