Rubber engine mounts keep breaking, 92 Camry
I have a 92 Camry XLE (4cyl), automatic, 154,000 miles. A couple years ago, the car would shake a bit while stopped and in gear (I've seen others mention this problem). I checked the motor mounts and noticed that the rubber inserts on the upper motor mounts were split open and cracked. I had them replaced (didn't really fix the shaking problem). I checked them again last week and they are completely broken again. Is it normal for these to break after less than 2 years?
I also have noticed that when I am stopped and in Drive, and then hit the gas to accelerate, I feel a little thump in the floor. It feels like something has slack in the drive train, hits the end of it's slack, and then catches making that thump. This has been going on for 3 years and has not gotten worse, so I wasn't thinking of a transmission problem... Could that thump be my engine torquing over, then thumping when the motor mounts prevent it from moving more? If this is the problem, is there a reason why the engine moves so much? This problem still existed when I had the fresh upper motor mounts installed. |

May want to check the big mount in the front. Mine acted the same way until I replaced it.

Re: Rubber engine mounts keep breaking, 92 Camry
Seems you are talking about two seperate issues.
1) Engine Mounts. You can check these yourself by lifting your engine on jacks (the mounts will appear better without weight on them). Check the rubber inserts, if they are cracked you should replace them or if you are cheap, find a liquid substitute. Always replace the front mount before the Torque. 2) For your shaking and thumping problem check the following: A)Vacuum leakage B) Leaking ERG Valve C) Your air filter could be jammed / clogged (need air to accelerate) D)Fuel pump not working properly or Filter needs replacing. E)Timing Belt needs replacing! (These things need replacing often!) Hope this helps. ~Fremen |

Re: Rubber engine mounts keep breaking, 92 Camry
replace all 4 mounts at the same time. its pricy but if you dont they will work against each other. the mounts at the radiator and fire wall are torque mounts the one at the timing belt cover and transmission support the weight of the engine transmission assy.
