Question Anyone know why. . .

. . .my IROC stalls when I give it gas? I can start it with a jump since the battery is almost completely dead (I just bought it) but when I gas it it stalls out. It's 86 with TPI. Could it be a sensor or a battery problem?

Re: Anyone know why. . .

Sounds like a computer problem to me. Check your throttle position sencor. When you hit the cas the tps sends a signal to your computer telling it to advance the timing a fuel spray, it may not be advancing the spray. So what's happening is your timing is advancing but your engine isn't so it's gonna die. Some one let me know if I'm wrong, I don't want to be giving missinformation.

Re: Anyone know why. . .

I've had o2 sensor problems before and never caused me to stall. But hey, it could happen. But still check your throttle possition sensor.

Re: Anyone know why. . .

Checking the o2 and tps sensors sounds good. the tps is 50 bucks new. But it couldn't possibly be a battery problem?

Also, we tried changing the computer. It wasn't that.

Is your check engine light comeing on? Try running a diognostic. If it's an o2 sencor you'll get a 13 I think.

Re: Anyone know why. . .

um, why is the battery dead??? is your alternator crapped out? if you dont have any juice, when you stomp it, your gonna basicly blow out your candles aka sparkplugs. also, do the basics, check all your wires, make sure they are set up right, your coil could be bad, look in your distributor cap and look for arcing or carbon scoring out of normal ammounts. might just need a tune up. also, check your timing. alot of people dont set the timing correctly, in other words, they dont disconnect the "set timing connector" and set the timing with the computer still trying to correct. dis conncet that connector, and make sure your base timing is right.

Ill bet you ten bucks that what it is my buick did that and it took me forever to figure the damn thing out. start it and then unhook the jumper cables, but don't whack the throttle. just let it idle. if it sputters then dies ( almost seems like is ran out of gas.) its your alt. Another thing to do is to start it up and disconnect the battery. If it dies then you know that it was depending on the battery for spark. If it does not die then then you know that your charging system is doing its job.

later

Re: Anyone know why. . .

id run with the alternator idea, otherwise grab your multimeter and start checking resistances on the sensors

Re: Anyone know why. . .

I believe the alternator problem is the way to start. I suspect you may have a dying fuel pump as well, but until the operating voltages in the system are correct, you cannot check it anyway. Ray

It's your alternator, but don't disconnect the battery while the engine is running... See your other post for why...

I removed the battery cables while it was running on my vette... yeah, bad idea. Fried my alternator, and took my tach with it. Tachs are expensive to fix in old cars like that =(
