is it possible to get away with smogging a b16a motor in a 90 crx si or would they make me take it to a ref. to determine what to do with it?

Re: smog b16a in cali

you would need to take it to a ref to smog it legally and it would also need to be converted to obd1 and have all the us emissions stuff from a b16 del sol on it.

Re: smog b16a in cali

thats the easiest way to get it pass at the ref, you would say its out of a 95 del sol vtec. other than that you would have to illegally smog, which is getting harder nowadays ive heard. good luck.

Re: smog b16a in cali

would i have to use the del sol tranny too?...cause i know they check your shit out from up and down if they know theres a diff motor....so your saying i have to use stock manifold and everythingto pass the smog?...one more thing would you recommend me holding on to all stock parts later on down the road smog comes agin and just put them back on?

Re: smog b16a in cali

I just talked to a smog guy and he told me that he only looks at engine numbers if the engine LOOKS different. Now we can tell the difference by looking at them but the DOHC and the VTEC stamped on to should key them in to the fact that there is a B16 in the car. Solution... grind off the VTEC and the DOHC on the valve cover. He told me if it looks good and passes out of the pipe then I would be alright. Just make sure everything is hooked up and take you intake and header off if you have one. He also told me that the Ref is just going to make sure that your emission parts are all there. On my car all there is is a charcoal canister and a cat. There is no smog pump like on some cars. If worst came to worst you could always keep your old engine around and put it back in every two years. That would suck but I think that might be the only option if you cannot pass. Just hope the smog tech does not know what he is looking at. Also he told me that since a 1.6 litre did come in the CRX then he would over look it. Hope this helps. When I get my swap done I am going to take it to him to see what he says.

Re: smog b16a in cali

no, tranny doesnt matter. they will just be looking for emissions stuff. so youll need a stock intake manifold and preferbly a stock exhaust manifold too just to make it easier. or if you get all parts with a CARB # then you should be fine.

Ok in california if you put any honda motor in your car and it is JDM you will never never never (3 times) get it legally smogged. You can smog any post year (your year or after your year motor) honda motor into any civic you want and smog it legally if you have the computer, the smog equip, all the sensors hooked up, all the canisters(vapor and fuel) in the right area of the car, and the smog ref has to appove it before you even take it down to see if it smogs. Also if the smog ref. says one thing is out of place your done for the day out 75 bux and have to fix the problem and pay another 75 for him to look at it again. Usually there really cool here but there have been a few friends I know that have put chevy motors in there toyotas(4x4's) that have had major problems with the local ref station. Just my on stuff I have seen and heard from the source. Also in california if you live in a remote location they dont have to smog cars like in the mountains but if you get pulled over for any speed violation and the cop looks uder your hood and see you have a motor in there not stock and no ref tag your done like bacon.
