I'd go with a turbo AWD eclipse or talon, preferably a talon because they go for less money. Aftermarket for these cars is cheap and endless. You could buy a decent one for 4000 and throw another grand into and be able to crack high 12's or low 13's. dsmtuners.com is a good place to do a little research.

hello, fellow seeker after budget fun
yeah Mumm, I started the "under $5,000" thread, but it's FAR from played out. Everyone here has been awesome, friendly, and helpful with some good suggestions, but there is much work and research yet to do to find the perfect budget undercover sports ride.
Since starting that thread, I have driven a 95 Integra-- nice, reasonably fast, some blind spots in back, but no car is perfect. Drove a '96 Accord that had been modified heavily, and it was a high quality car, no doubt, but it sat you high, so the sensation of speed really wasn't there. Also drove a '94 Saturn (must have been the base model, couldn't find an alphanumeric) -- it wasn't very fast but it was fun to drive. No blind spots. It seats you low to the ground, --lower than the '95 Integra or the '96 Honda-- which increases perceived sensation of speed, a very important quality! Early 90's Preludes, Corollas, Legends, & Sentras also seem to all share this "low to the ground" driver seating benefit.. In fact, I think I'll start another thread about it. A friend of mine mentioned that he knows someone with a Mitsu Eclipse and that the engine is in bad shape, but it's a nice car overall. I am trying to arrange a test drive. Also waiting for my friend with the '94 Legend to get back in town so I can drive that. I'll post if it's anything to write home about. Please keep me informed of your findings as well. I hope this helps. |

Anyway, pick a 240sx,you can drag race, drift, and do anything you want in it,it's a universal car,but if you want it to perform better, get one around $2,500,then get a SR20DET and drop it in there, thats your best choice for around $5,000.. |

Re: Good Car For Around $5000
240SX's were first made in 89 and ended in 94 w/that bodystyle (S13) but continued in 95 w/a new bodystyle (S14)...and concluded in 97..technically...98's were just unsold 97's...so I am told

Re: Good Car For Around $5000
You have to get a SR20DET from japan. The only 240's sold in USA came with a KA24DE,it has torque, but thats not what you want for performance..If you want to,get one from a S13(make sure its a black-top),or a S14. The S15 is too expensive and only has a few more hp,not worth it. Get a S13(89-94) body,Hatchback...Then you can get a JDM S15 front end conversion,oh man! I know thats what i want...

BTW...you DONT only have to get the SR20DET...you can go KA24DE-T, RB20DET, RB25DET, (if you have crazy money...RB26DETT), or even CA18DET |

Nissanspdr & Nacho_Nissan,
<kung fu movie bow> your knowledge has been of great benefit to me in several of these threads-- thanks! But... based on what you and others have said, isn't the KA24DE-T an iffy choice because of its extra weight? Even with a turbo, can it really be compared to the SR20DET while weighing 500 pounds more? Second question: can you say some more about these engines? RB20DET, RB25DET -- how the RBs differ from the SR's? thanks. |
