91 Celica Questions (Ps I just bought one)

K here's the deal. I'm 18 and just bought my 2nd car. A Red '91 Celica Auto Transmission. I'm not sure what kind it is tho. I Know it has the 1.6L 4-Cyl engine but the car's manual says "Celica" and under that it says "Celica All-Trac" however in the manual everything says stuff like "** Only on all-trac editions" so i'm not sure if mine is a ST or All-Trac. I was told all 91 all-tracs are turbos, if thats true then i just have an ST. Anyways if anyone can tell me wut kind i have or how to tell them apart it'd be great, plus i need some tips on how to add some simple hp to my car. I'm talking about adding like 15-30hp. Any tips on how to build upon my car are welcome. Thanx to the ppl who give me input.

Ahh, IMHO the 5th gens are the prettiest cars in the world. But if your car has a 1.6ltr engine it's most definately the ST.

GT-S and All-trac ran the 2.0ltr 3S-GTE turbocharged 4cylinder engine

GT (What I got) has a 2.2ltr 5S-FE 4-cylinder engine.

The ST was the base model but it's still a good car. As far as getting some quick HP, I'm not sure if I can help with that. I'm going to be turbocharging my GT here shortly, but I expect that will give me more than just 15-30hp (If we note that 5sfe has .2 more displacement and it's the same turbocharger as on the 3s-gte which pulls 200hp vs. my 130), and its more work than most people want to put forth.

I suppose buying a new engine to put in your ride is probably out of the question, too (If not, look for a 3s-gte)

I'll leave modding advice to people with a bit more experience =)

if you are just looking for 15 - 30 hp simple things like, air intake, exhaust... small stuff like that should do it...

kiddo,
you might want to research a little on turboing the 3s-fe... the sfe has larger displacement but has thinner walls... the 3s-gte is 2.0L to withstand more preasure from the turbo... but the only real difference from the two engines is the headers... so you might want to swap the header and then put the turbo on... or just get a completely new engine

Seriously? Hmm, so if I could just find a block and header from a 3s-gte I could basically make mine a 3s-gte? Are they really that similar? Either way I knew I'd have to be careful, thanks for giving me something specific to be careful about =) I probably wont boost much past 6-8psi max, putting in a thicker head gasket when I rebuild the head to decrease compression a smidge.

Re: 91 Celica Questions (Ps I just bought one)

I would start small, with an exhaust. That and an air intake, normally it doesn't make much difference, but on my car It really made a HUGE difference. It was worth the money. My manual says the same thing, but I have a 91 celica GT-S, it has a 2.2L DOHC. It's nice, It has over 180,000 mi,the only problem is oil leaks, mainly because I've had to change the valve cover gasket 2 times, There is a lot of vibration from the motor. But it's not a horrible oil leak, it's barely noticable. I love my car, no major problems.

Wrong.

And how does a different head have larger displacement?

The 3S is a 2.0 liter engine. The FE and GE is head design. Head design doesn't change the displacement.

He just bought this car, I doubt he wants to swap engines... why is this the answer for everything? This is getting very very lame.

No. You cannot simply do that.

You need something to control fuel and timing for starters. Your engine wasn't made with a turbo, so it's not equipped to control one.

For more power, do the intake, full exhaust, new OEM wires, cap and rotor. And try using some NGK copper plugs rather than platinum. Plats just last longer, copper has better spark. (conductivity)

Be careful what you read on the internet.

My best advice, is don't take other's advice over the internet...
