Does this car have crank walk?
Hello, I went to check out a 95 GSX yesterday. The car is in great condition interior/exterior wise. Great custom interior, but the problem is that I heard a ticking/clicking noise coming from the engine when it was running. I recognize the noise from my friend's GST who's car is no longer running (He claims it's the motor mounts). Is this that dreaded crank walk I've been hearing about? I've read and it's characterized as the ticking noise with a faulty shift. If you hear the noise but experience no problem with the shifter, is it still the same problem? I was under the impression that if u didn't get it by like 50-60k miles it wouldn't happen. This car has 92k.
Also one more thing.. one of the cv joints on the car is busted. Is it safe to assume that the rest could be shortly behind (the car has like 7 or 8 right?). Because that would be one hell of a dagger to my wallet. I was planning on taking my mechanic with me today, but for some reason I doubt he knows about crank walk or how to detect it. This guy had looked at my friend's GST before and told him his motor mount was busted. |

one more question..
How much would I be looking at to have the crank shaft replaced as well as all the bearings... Over 2k? |

On a 2g, the motor will stop running before you hear any audible signs of CW in most cases. The ticking is the crank trigger plate hitting the sensor. Once that destroys itself the motor wont run. This is only true for 2g, 1g does not have a seperate crank angle sensor, its incorporated into the cam angle sensor on thehead.
Replacing the crank and bearings is cheap, usually less than 400 in parts. Labor can get up there, but I can do it in a couple hours. Who knows what a shop will charge. The real kicker is most of the time its unsuccessful anyway...
