I have a 1996 Saturn that I basically only use for work. The car only has 22,000 miles on it.
The problem I am having does not seem major. But I would like to get to the bottom of it before it gets any worse... When the car eventually gets hot and I come to a complete stop the idle will drop to 550-600rpms almost as if it were going to stall and then jump back up to its normal 700+ rpms. It did not d0 this or I did not notice this before I had gotten the valve cover gasket changed. I also changed the Air Filter and the PCV valve today to see if it would help any. At first it seemed like the PCV valve was helping out a little bit. But then it started doing the same thing. Does anyone know what else could be causing the idle to drop below its normal idle of 700+rpms to 550-600rpms for a second or so. And then come back up. Like I said. It studders a very little bit and then come right back up to normal. Again this only happens when the car is running hotter ( Stop and go traffic ) probably when the fan is kicking on and off. Please let me know what else I should be looking into. Thanks |

Re: 1996 SL Idle Question
I have a '96 SL1 and I had a similar problem (now I have the opposite!). I had my spark plug wires changed and a fuel injector flush and it stopped doing that. My engine also runs a little hot sometimes, mostly in traffic as you said. Don't know if the two are correlated, but its definitely annoying!
