I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

Okay so I ran over some huge invisible thing on the freeway today and had people yelling out their window I'm spraying gas everywhere. I pull over and what do you know there's a puddle of gas. Good thing I filled up over lunch, It was leaking so bad I used the whole tank F to E from hitting something to pulling up to my house. Anyways the dealership wants $450 for a new tank, plus labor etc.. fuck that. Junkyard wants $100 so I'm going to do this myself. I have a 2000 hatchback, please help me asap, thanks.

Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

thats sucks when something like that happens to your car. i just got my tire fixed coz it was leaking air...it so happens that there was a nail that went through. theres too much hazards on the freeway now...especially those tires that blew out of a truck/trailer. cant insurance cover something like that? dealerships usually charge too much for service/parts. feels like your being ripped off.

Re: Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

I have a $500 deductible making it not worth the effort to "save" $20 or so if I took it to a dealership. I've installed everything on my car so I imagine a fuel tank can't be too hard. I just want to know of any tips/tricks I can use from somebody who's ever installed one.

Got to the dealership or ebay and buy a honda service manual for your specific model/year. They run about $60 and are well worth the money, especially if anything like this happens again. They give you step by step instruction on how to fix anything from hood to trunk on your car. (don't buy a generic haynes manual, although it may have it....you could check there first.)

Re: Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

dude youre from c-bus right??? i dont know what junk yards you have checked out yet but "all foreign" is a pretty good one. when my ride was stolen into i went there for a f-load of parts. decent prices.

where the hell were you when you hit this object...was it a small child or animal? ive had more problems around here with pot holes and other bullshit messing up rims, tires and alignment...try making up a good ass story and call the city of columbus. my buddie hit a pot hole and bent the fuck out of his rim, he called and bitched and sure enough after he got 2 quotes they mailed him a check for $350 for a new rim/tire. worth a try...

GOod Luck...

Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

I left a message with All Foreign around 6 and I think they close at 5:30. I've delt w/them before, that's where I bought my second DX engine (for a whopping $150 ).

Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

WHAT?!?! when i wanted to swap an h22a4 into my civic (i know, not the best of ideas) they wanted way too much ($2500 for an engine w/ 85,000miles on it) and were not willing to negotiate. my mechanic says that theyre not the best to deal with when getting whole engines. sounds like you might have gotten a pretty good deal from them though...gL with the tank problem...

Damn man, that's messed up what happened to your tank. Sorry I can't help out, but I've never done anything like replacing a tank before.

Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

1. Disconnect negative from battery
2. relieve fuel pressure
3. jack up car
4. using drain bolt, remove any excess fuel in tank, into approved container
5. remove exhaust pipe heat shield
6. remove rear seat and access panel
7. disconnect fuel gauge sending unit, fuel pump, remove fuel feed pipe and return lines
8. remove fuel hose protectors
9. disconnect the hoses
10. place jack or other support under tank
11. remove strap bolts
12. remove tank
install new washer on drain bolt and the fuel line, then install parts in reverse order of removal.

The tank may stick to the undercoating, just pry it off the mount.
Make sure ingnition is in the OFF position.

*EDIT* oh yea, don't smoke, and have a can of gas to refill when you're done. */EDIT*

Re: Re: I ran over something and it tore my gas tank open..

Cool thanks man. I have ZERO gas in the tank because it was torn open in the rear corner. My seat's already out so I don't have to mess with that. I've got a Walboro in there so I'm familiar with taking that out. Sounds like a pretty easy job.
