Need Help: Alternator & Alternator Belt issues
Anybody have any tips on replacing the belt and alternator on my 97 Metro?
I can't seem to get it to not squeek. I've had 2 alternators die and several belts shread and break.. presumably because of this issue. |

on the same belt. Some times there is a little play in the body of the alternator when the mounting bolt is slack. Make sure the alternator is fully lined up before tightening the mounting and adjusting bolts. It is possible you killed your alternator by overtightened. I would expect this to lead to a bearing failure in the alternator drive. Then I would drop it, get some rims and a nice tailpipe. Add a chrome shifter and some Toyota Racing stickers and you'll be the envy over everybody on the block! |

Yeah, it does sound like you're over-tighetning it. When you tighten the belt, you should be able to push the belt with 1 finger, so it flexes 1". That's how I usually tighten mine. Could also be a bent or loose water pump pulley, or main pulley.
