Question 40 or 45 offset for my new 16's?

I have a 2000 Civic EX lowered about 1.5 inches all the way around with Eibach Pro-kit springs and Koni Yellow adjustable shocks. I'm replacing my rims with 16 by 7 inch Rota Slipstreams that come in 40 and 45 offsets.

Which offset should I choose and why?

Clearly I don't know a thing about offset and I'm too lazy to look it up, so any link to a simple visual explanation of offset would be appreciated.

The correct size to keep your odometer and speedo correct would be 205/45x16".

Oh yeah whoops I would go with 45 to play it safe Some company's 40mm offset is 38mm which will rub, and some company's 40mm offsets are 42mm.

Re: 40 or 45 offset for my new 16's?

Offset is the distance between the mounting surface & the center of the rim. Positive offset changes the track width of the car- the more the better, just dont cut a tire on a fender. I think offset is more important than wheel width/tire width because that does not widen the stance, also larger/wider tires take more power to turn & stop = slower car than if you had more offset with skinnier tires. To get the most out of backspacing, quality/performance type wheel spacers can be used. Its easier to roll the fenders, than it is to move the suspension so the tires don't rub.

While I'm at it, backspacing the distance between the mounting surface & inboard edge of the rim

Ohhhhh...ok...more positive offset means the wheel sticks out less. I had to draw it for myself to understand it. Am I right? Is Jackassi wrong?

Does anyone have 16 by 7 inch Slipstreams with 40 offset that can let me know if they have rubbing problems? Include how much you've dropped your car for my reference.

Yes a higher number (+45mm) brings the wheels more/tucked underneath the wheel wells. Lower offset (+37mm) pushes the wheels/tires out further from the center of the car.

Hehe. Yeah, sorry, your name is jackassi. I couldn't help myself. More importantly I just wanted to get it straight and make the right choice. I'll go with 45.
