True but at one time or another most everyone has had a copied program on their system, or an MP3. That in its self is not the main problem as I look at it. Most companies are after the business that do it as they will get large sums of money, not so much as the little guy who can't afford to change his mind let alone cough up a few hundered grand.

Yep. But I do it anyways. There is no way in hell I could afford some of the $hit that is out there. I try to justify it in my own way, but theft is still theft, no matter if it is a stick of gum, or a $2000 piece of software.

And about campus computers, I know for a fact that alot of it goes on. Part of my job there was to clean illegal / pirated software off college machines, and to make sure it stays that way. Now that is a tough task.

I also know of tons of ppl at our college that sell burned cd's of stuff, its crazy i tells ya.

Please dont tell Mr.Gates that I pirate his software, and tons of other stuff.

True theft is theft, but there are degrees, and the real problem is the people who download copied software (or mps/vids, whatever), and burn it to cds and sell it. Especially those that also copy the cd cover so perfectly it looks like a bought one. Joe bloggs sitting at home downloading a cracked version of Paintshop Pro so he can make his scanned photos look good for his personal website, is not really a problem, as far as I can see.

Like with mp3s too - I have downloaded heaps, sure. Most of them are actually songs I have on vinyl, and therefore can't really listen to anymore, without paying a second time for the cd (sometimes a third time, cos I bought the cassette, then the lp). No way am I going to do that, and I shouldn't be expected to, either. ok there are some other tracks I've downloaded, but they've actually prodded me into buying more cds again, after not buying any for ages.

No offence meant here, moondog. But that is what I meant about justifying it in your own way. It is still theft, and Joe bloggs may have actually purchased the software if he really needed it and could not pirate it. Sure a few copies aint gonna make much difference but in the end its still illegal. If a program gets pirated enough, the programmers may begin to get angry. All that hard work, and ppl using it for free.

Im not judging anyone here, and I do attempt to justify my pirating of software in a similar way as I use it for personal-use only or for ppl I know that arent gonna sell it, and that I can trust not to bust me to the local authorities.

Once and a while tho, I sit back and think about it and in esscense it is just the same as ripping off a candy bar from a convienience store.

Just my .02

But I don't make one car at a high cost and make infinite copies at a fraction of the cost.

Personally I used to priate a lot of software but I never, ever made a dime off it. Now I won't priate anything because there are may free alternatives out there if you know where to look. I'm also in the VERY initial steps of creating my own software company. My product won't be very interesting to the general public or home user but I probably will have a free evaluation copy anyway. I don't expect anyone to pay upwards of $1000 bucks for something they don't really need.
