I have a 1996 Saturn SL2. It continually develops a sticky gas pedal about a month after I pay to have it "cleaned". It's only sticky when the car is running. Every time you press on the gas, you have to press extra hard to get past the 'stick', and then the car lurches forward, because you end up gunning it. I want to know how to clean this myself, and if possible, how to prevent it from sticking again with either oil additive or something to spray with silicone lubricant.

Re: Sticky Gas Pedal - '96 SL2
Remove the TB and clean the back of it with TB cleaner. Clean the outside too & the spring and cable linkage. Clean around the edge of the plate and the walls good. This should fix it up.

Not to bring up an old thread, but this was the case on my 95 SL as well, a sticky gas pedal. However mine wasn't dirty at all. I am begining to think this is fairly common on all saturns. What happen's is the ISS (Idle set screw) sort of self loosens over time. A re-adjustment using the procedure described per the manual is this,
Get car to operating temp pull plastic plug off of ISS turn screw clockwise until you here the idle increase up to over 1000 rpm's. Then very gradually back the screw out counterclockwise, until you reach idle of around 600-800 or so. Don't over do it, or it'll be right back were you started. Then go inside the car and rev up the engine, the idle should drop back down to normal, if it stays high, then back the screw out a little more til it doesn't stay revved high. Your gas pedal should now be very smooth, and should begin taking rpms with your foot smoothly. Put back plastic little plug. I have done this now on my two saturns, and one friends, and they all worked the same. Hopefully this works for someone else as well. |
