electrical problems

Ok I need some help please

I have a 1996 s-10 with the vortex v6 and it runs like a dream but I am plagued with a persistent problem and it seems to be getting worse.

It is going thru ignition switches and fuel pump relays like crazy!

It starts out by being difficult to start and if I tap on the relay it fires up just fine, then it starts shutting off while driving, then it gets to the point were it wont start at all (all of this over a period of a couple of months). If I replace the relay it works just fine for a little while then it all starts over again.

After 8 months to a year of this the ignition switch craps out and has to be replaced. After that every thing works fine for several months before the relay starts acting up then it starts the whole cycle over again.

And now it seams to be getting worse the interval in between relays is getting shorter.

The truck has been to two different mechanics and the dealership twice and no one can figure it out.

Logic tells me something is causing the fuel pump relay circuit to draw too much current but I can't figure it out.

And now the lights are flickering while I drive which leads me to believe the voltage regulator is going out and I am wondering if the other problem has affected the regulator or what.

Thanks In advance for any help you guys can provide.

Chris

Well the first thing you want to look for is possible opens or shorts in your electrical system. You have to remember elect. works on a simple principle. You must have current and ground and both must be closed(no broken wires or cuts) If you have a ground wire open to metal contact or no ground at all you can draw excessive, or just as bad, insufficient current and burn relays and pumps. get an electrical wiring diagram from your dealers parts dept., make sure it comes from chevy, and strat tracing wires. You will find your problem. And invest in a test light and voltmeter.
