Eclipse Poll

My parents dont want me to get an eclipse GST because according to a car rating site, the eclipse GST gets 2/5 stars on reliability which means substatially worse than average. Not to mention almost everything else had 2/5 except styling and design.

Please post Your -

1) Eclipse Model/Year

2)Happiness with it (1-10)

3)How reliable it is

I would appreciate this a lot, im kinda stressed about this whole thing and im not sure if eclipse is such a good idea or not now. Thanks a lot.

aslong as you are willing to do your basic maintenance on the car you wont have any problems. but if you get a used car that was raped by the previous owner, obviously you might have more trouble than normal. but thats a risk you take when you buy used. hope this helps.

Don't put too much thought into those reliability ratings. Many car manufacturers are really pissed off at JD Power and others like them over the ways they determine car quality. Much of their criteria seems rediculous, such as they gave the Hummer a poor quality rating because of the gas mileage. If you go solely by those ratings, the only car you'll buy will be a Toyota/Lexus. DSM's have a solid reputation for mechanical reliability, even while running 15+psi.

Re: Eclipse Poll

Hey im not worried about it. i just bought my 97gst and the cars a dream not to mention a chick magnet. the car looks pimpen and is enough to kill any ricer out there. i went thru a huge debate on it and over all my extremely happy with it. but try to get a warranty on the car and there shouldnt be anything to worry about. and off all the sites i been to they all gave it a great rating.

High powered turbo cars will never be as reliable as the other slow POSs But its not that bad. I drive at 25 psi, or 400 whp, all day every day, 35,000 miles per year. Does it break occasionaly? yes. Learn how to work on your car, problem solved.

Re: Eclipse Poll

i got a 97 GS-T Spyder and I couldn't be happier. just remember to change your oil and to not drive like an idiot and you will have a great time, and a car that is as reliable as any other.

Re: Eclipse Poll

Well I showed all the responses to my mom and she seemed really happy but she told me this. Apparently the timing belt should have been replaced at 60k miles and there are no maintenance records saying that it was. Its gonna cost me 650$ to have it replaced if it needs it and I could find a lot better deal if I need to do that. What should I do? Also, 95GSX, my mom read your reply and now shes going around saying "We need to make sure the other owner didnt rape it" and then starts laughing so thanks a lot ;-)

Re: Re: Eclipse Poll

you NEED to get the timing belt replaced IMMEDIATELY!! that is one of the most crucial things with these cars. If it breaks its atleast a whole new head. but something else is the person might have done their own mechanicing, doing the 60,000 mile maintenance isnt really all that hard. so if he did there wouldn't be record of it. hope you enjoy the car.

1) 98 gs
2) 10 10 10 10 10 10
3) One of my favorite cars of all time. Timing belt will have to be done. The cost is mostly on labor. If you can then try to do it yourself. It takes a long time. Also be aware of a crank walk at over 100k miles. Take care of the car and it will take care of you.

if the car has a 100,000 miles on it, it isnt going to c-walk. everyone worry's about that way to much. it isnt a common thing to c-walk an engine. it has been discussed in depth so if you would like more info search it out a little bit. also remember 90% of the shit you read on the internet is BS.

The 3 motors that i crankwalked did so at 30k, 40k, and 50k miles. All mitsu rebuilds after the original motor. Go to www.racingknowledge.com, DSM section, and there is a sticky called crankwalk where I put everything I have learned about it over the years, firsthand. Be careful what you believe.
