Is there a way to Disable ABS and have "normal" brakes. Can I just pull the fuse? any ideas?

I know of 2 reasons to disable the ABS. One, if the control module goes bad, the part itself costs about $600 and that's for a remanufactured one.

The other, if you are using your Jimmy for some off-road fun, it's kind of hard to do some power slides if the brakes won't lock up. :-)

The control module on my '93 went bad. As a result, the ABS light was constantly on and wouldn't pass inspection that way. So, a friend of mine, who knows about cars, and I disconnected the wires on the ABS module. It's located above the front wheel well on the driver side.

There may have been something else disconnected that I'm not aware of. If this doesn't take care of it, let me know and I'll find out what else was disconnected.

Good luck.

Yes, I suppose there's that offroad aspect to entertain.

I cannot support permanent deactivation of a safety system though.

I believe that in 4wd, the ABS is deactivated by a switch on the transfer case.

Here is a something you might find useful. When I bought my '93 Jimmy, I test drove it and the ABS worked. Then when I picked it up and was driving around I had to stop suddenly and the brakes locked. I didn't really care since I never had ABS in any other vehicle I owned.

However here is the interesting part. When I had to replace the rotors some time later, I noticed something. When the dealer saftied my truck they didn't replace them with the "Spec" rotor, which is about $80 CDN, they replaced them with a $20 rotor of the same size. The Rotor that makes the ABS work (which I now have ABS) has what looks like a gear (Teeth) on the inside of the rotor hub. The sensor I guess reads how fast/slow the gears go by and enable the ABS.

So get a set of rotors that are the same size and thickness that do not have the "gear" on the inner hub and you should now have no ABS.

Hope this helps or sparks some replies.

very interesting... so if he got rotors from a jimmy without ABS he would be good to go. theoretically.

Theroretically... yes... but honestly YES!
I know for fact since my truck was equiped with ABS and worked when I test drove it... but when the GM dealer did the safety, they obviously didn't want to spend the $160 on rotors... so they fitted it with the same size rotor... The ones without the "gear" on the inner hub. When I did my brake job and replaced my rotors with the Spec rotor, I now have ABS.

:o) Should work, in more then therory.
