Tamiya spray paints are FAKE Lacquer?????

I just tried the tamiya clear spray lacquer TS-13. after it dried I did my usual test and rubbed on some 91% isopropyl alcohol (you can get it from ANY drug store) and the paint came right off

now the only type of paint that can be removed by alcohol is acrylics (thats why you thin acrylic with alcohol).. are tamiya lacquers actually acrylic paints??? if they are then why do they have such a heavy stench???

Tamiya spray paints are synthetic lacquers, so technically, yes, they are fake.

How long did you let them 'dry' before you performed your test?

It has been discussed on this forum and in several articles that they can take up to 4 weeks to fully cure.

What is your point? PPG Lacquer which is what MCW now sells is acrylic lacquer. It also will come off with alcohol. So does ppg clear. You may be even more surprised to know the new Testors line of lacquers are actually base coat/clear coat paints. They will be worthess without a clear coat on the top. Anyway Tamiya paints are the best thing out there. They work better than any other brand of paint we can buy in a can. Do you test all of your paints after they dry this way? If you do then why? Is ther a reason you are worried about alcohol exposure?

hm. I wish i knew isopropyl alcohol takes that stuff off. I got a lil over spray on my forumula windshield. I ended up breaking it using mineral spirits trying to rub it off. BTW, Tamiya paint is like testors, it doesnt stick on the corners. I/E where the fender and door meet, the paint doesnt stick until 1mm after the panel line.

I test every new kind of paint I get to see how permanent it is.. Ive found that the more permanent the paint, the more sanding/polishing it can take.. thats why I dont use acrylic on car body because if you sand them they peel.

in my book the three kinds of paint are defined by their effective solvent.

acrylic - alcohol

enamel - paint thinner

lacquer - lacquer thinner

also.. I categorize them by their stench

acrylic - good

enamel - tolerable

lacquer - baaaaad

so the tamiya stuff is as "permanent" as acrylic but smells as bad as lacquer..

and Ive noticed that it shrinks as much as lacquer as it dries from the inside out.. which is different from acrylic and enamel. one thing about lacquer is that it takes a lot of polishing because it doesn't skin over and hide tiny imperfections.

I think you need to put a few dust coats on first or otherwise the paint will creep away from the edges.

try putting a few dust coats on before heavy coats.

That's because you try to coat with too thick of a paint at a time, and that's why paint runs away from the ridges. And the body, use primer and spray lightly for the first few coats, and you'll never have the problem with Tamiya, Testor or any brand for that matter.

You better joking right ? Testors Spray is the frist step to scrap a model ! Dont know why, but when I left Testor for Tamiya, all my kit came out with perfect job.. tryed back testor and had problem.. I dont use Testor spray and never will anymore. Stay Away !

I admit Duplicolor paint are good too and less expensive

You should be able to get a near perfect finish with tamiya paint right out of the can . No polishing required. Also this stuff sticks. Based upon your comments that lacquers don't skin over and hide imperfections I understand a little more about your painting methods. Paint is not designed to fill imerfections. This should be done before and during the primer stages. No wonder you are sanding so much.

it doesnt matter that they are synthetic, alcohol can dissolve all types of lacquer. some people even use denatured alcohol to thin their lacquer paints.
