Engine swap on Mustang
I'm looking for info on the possibilities of an engine swap on a Mustang. I want to replace the 5.0 engine with a 429CUI engine from a '68-'73 Thunderbird. Is it possible? Has it been done before? (Pretty sure it has..) Any major problems? What gearbox to use, Mustang's or Thunderbird's? Any sites about this subject?
Thanks a bunch peeps! |

Re: Engine swap on Mustang
You can find the mounts, oil pan, headers at Summit or Jegs. www.superford.org may help. There are some discussion forums you can use.

What year Mustang is it you want to perform the swap on? Judging by the mention of the 5.0, it's a Fox Body, right?
If this is the case, then a 429 swap is not a particularly good idea. At least not the T-Bird 429 (a relative of the 390, if I recall the engine right) which is NOT even close to the infamous semi-hemi Boss 429. Either way, you're looking at relocating the steering box, fabricating mounts, custom headers, custom adaptor plate for the transmission, probably an engine flexplate, and a whole lot of headache. A much easier swap is to find the Ford/Lincoln 460ci V8 which is available as a crate engine and thanks to many kits is practically a plug and play unit. Though, I will say this, be prepared to drop any road racing pretensions. That 460 is a heavy as hell beast, but are you going to argue with an easy 500+ lb ft of torque?
