Passat 1.8T oil specifications

The Passat 1.8T manual specifies 5w-40 oil ONLY. I cannot find ANY 5w-40 oil for purchase in the open market or on the web. I did however find a web site which listed various oils that wer being manufactured, INCLUDING Castrol 5w-40 synthetic, BUT this oil was manufactured (just) for Volkswagen. I did find one VW dealer which has Castrol 5w-40 synthetic oil at $5.30/quart in bulk (bring your own can) or $10.70 per quart in individual cans.

Not wanting to get into a possible warranty war with VW, I want to use the correct viscosity range when I change oil. Where can I get 5w-40 synthetic oil in the automotive market without having to be beholden to VW. I don't care if it has to be by mail-order.

Thanks,
EdEck

5W-30 synthetic will keep the 1.8T flying. US$5.x is retail price per quart of synthetic. A few freak retailers charge near $7 per quart to support their sex-with-animals habits.

Go for the 5w30 synth'
