Overheated EGR valve melts stuff!

Hi all! my name is Jonathan Keffer, and I own a 1990 Oldsmobile 98 Touring sedan. It has the 3800 V6. It has run good since I have had it, but recently it has started to have problems. I was driving one day, and the car stalled. It would not start. FInally I got it started, drove a few miles, it died again, in a few minutes it started, reluctantly. got it home, poured some fuel treatment in the gas tank. It did better, but still ran rough sometimes. I finally decided to take a close look. Pulled the plastic cover off of the engine that covers the fuel rail, and the side of the cover that sits next to the egr valve was black. It had been melted! it got so hot, it also melted the plug on the nearest Fuel injector! the wiring that goes into the EGR is also crispy. I know this is a serious problem. I looked at a new EGR, 300+ dollars! I love my car and don't like to be cheap, but I dont know if I want to spend that much money at one time, on one car, if you know what I mean. What is the problem? could the Cat be plugged up? something else too, the analog fuel gauge and the electronic one on the DIS dont match. I start the car in the morning, and the analog is below the 100, but the electronic one says 150! could this be part of the problem. Also, when I turn the heater on, and have it above 65 degrees, the air conditioning compressor turns on and off, over and over. This is fall, I dont need it, and my fuel economy is suffering. What can I do, what is going on? I dont have the benifit of hardware that can check error codes and whatnot. Please help, I feel terrible about this, i am really worried.

common problem - easy fix

Your problem is not unique. These blocks have a problem with the plastic upper plenum and an oversized EGR tube on the bottom manifold. The fix can be found at www.ken-co.com/manifold and the inventory is available in the U.S. by emailing [email protected]
