applying tamiya basic putty

hi guys,

I wanted to know what is the best way to apply putty to models.

Last night I added a bit of putty to a primed model since I felt there were some gaps that needed to be filled, however i noticed that this putty sticks to my finger like paint (it smells like paints and is very runny out of the tube)

in addition, to clean up the putty from unwanted places, I sanded. now i have plastic showing through, should I re-prime that section of the car? (the rear end in my case)

What exactly are u trying to do? Are u using Tamiya Basic putty and thinning it out to spray on the car? Well if u are trying to patch up some wholes easier, a better way would be to get some small stick and just put some on the place and leave it for a while and just sand.

First off, don't apply the putty with your finger, instead use some type of knife.

You should reprime that part. I've had trouble with painting when most parts were covered with gray putty with sections revealing bare plastic after sanding. Painting it red, I discovered that the paint was lighter where no primer existed.

I was using a q-tip, I will have to build some kind of mini spatula, - no I am not thining the putty, but its very "wet" when it comes out the tube, then it begins to harden


Honoturtle , thanks for the re-priming advise.
I guess it would be safe to mask the parts I am not going to re-prime correct? or will tamiya masking tape pull the primer off? the coat is more then 24hr old

I have to say dont use the tamiya basic putty....i think its crap. I did use it for small things and think its usless, it shrinks and its $$.

I just went to a local automotive store and got some 2 part putty. I find it so much better.

But thats me, some ppl like it.

this is what i have so far,

also what i did is I wet sanded the entire body with 2000 grit, now I will re-prime tomorrow, I guess one or 2 coats (light)
