i've got a 94' mustang gt and i was wondering how low of gears should i go,but i still want to be able to run at least a 100. Im not for sure what is in it now but is very slow on take off. I cant chose between 373 or 410's im open 4 any suggestions. My friend has got a 95 gt and he can smoke me on takeoff and i want to change that.So tell me what i need 2 do to beat him. Ive also herd a chip was a good idea and i also herd it was a waste of money if your car was stock.

I have 3.73 gears and can still run speeds of 120 mph.

just a guess, you are in your teens so you should consider few things, 1) new gears will drastically affect gas mileage for he worse. be prepared to spend a little more extra money and visit the pump more often. 2) there are many more factors of getting beat off the line then just gears. are you both running the same trannies? how about tires? tread design, tire pressure, flexibility and the grip you get from your tires, also the width makes a big difference. if i were you (and had the money) get you a good soft tire with good grip, you wont get as many miles out of them especially if you roast them alot.BFG makes an excellent drag radial if you want to get serious or michelin pilots are a fairly good price tire for their performance.
remember: the size of your tire directly affects your rear end gears (since it is a ratio) so a smaller wider and softer tire would lower gears therefore better takeoff but not lower your top end as just a gear change would.

scotty - the loss in fule efficiency relates to top speed per gear, i wouldn't worry about 3.73's though, with 4.10's i'm sure you could still pull 100.

I run a 3.55 gearing in my 94' mustang gt and i can smoke everyone of my boys off the line. They are running 3.73's and higher and i have no problem taking them off the line or even in a quarter mile.

you know if i wanted respect in this forum there are others ways for me to go about it. for one, why in the hell would anyone lie about a boosted V6 when saying i have a cobra would be easier (and what some people do) but thats not the way a fly. also there is nothing wrong with being a teen as i am one myself. but my assumption to his age was due to the fact he was interested in coming off the line quicker for the sole purpose of beating his friend. he didnt gift us with other reason he wanted takeoff so therefore i thought i would inform or refresh him of the idea that gear changes DO differ in mileage. were talking differences at 65 mph 3200rpm cruising vs 2700rpm. if you got a few miles of highway to go it will make a difference.

65 @3200? maybe in fourth!

between 3.55s and 3.73s @ 65mph we are talking about a differnce of less then 200rpms in fifth gear.

i used 265/50/15 in the formulas (its what i run on my stang) which end up with a tire diameter of 25.4 inches.
but like i said...the size of your tire drasticaly affects the gear ratio. and therefore should not be overlooked when a gear swap is wanted for example
if you run 265/50/15 @65mph running 3200rpm you are running 3.73s but if you run 255/40/15 @65mph running 3200rpm you are running 3.36s

alright, listen up -
you claimed 65 mph at 3200 rpms, which is a joke. with 25.6 inch tall tires, a transmition gear of .73 (the standard fifth) and a rear end ratio of 3.55 you are looking at 94 miles per hour at 3200 rpms.

with 3.73s and all else constant (that means unchanged) you would be cruzing at 89 mph. to bring this car with 3.73s to 94 mph again all you add is another 160 rpms.

100 mph with 3.73 gears is 3570 rpm on that same car.

Dan, I got these #'s from an analyzer over on MW.
All #'s are with stock T-5 transmission gears ratios of .625 for years 85-93, and 25.6" tall tire.

3.55 gears, 3200 rpms = 100 mph in 5th gear.
3.73 gears, 3200 rpms = 96 mph in 5th gear.
3.73 gears, 100 mph = 3329 rpms in 5th gear.

Oh and don't worry about that shmuck anymore! Some how he was only banned for a day, but now he's toast!
