97 Civic with 17" rims has bouncy ride
I recently bought a 97 honda civic DX coupe as a daily driver. my main car is a 2003 350z. The honda has 83,000 miles.
The Honda tires needed replacing so i bought new tires and rims (17" rims) the tires are lower profile that what I would have preferred but i got a good deal. Anyhow, the ride is bouncy and its feels very loose on the freeway. The steering is not stiff like on the 350z, and seriously sometimes i feel like the poor car is going just gunna shake apart on potholes. I dont expect the car to handle like the 350z, but compared to my girlfriends 1996 honda civic EX (with 100k) , the ride is terrible. I had the car inspected, inside and out when I bought it and the mechanics said everything was fine. Im wondering if the larger tires and rims dont work with the stock suspension or if the stock suspension has just worn out and needs repair. I don't want to lower the car or anything, and if I need to improve the suspension / replace stock supsension to support 17" rims i'd probably just go back and put 15" rims/tires back on the car. http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/iva...da.jpg&.view=t Any suggestions? |

sounds like your suspension is just worn out. When I had my 95 it rode like that even with 17's with tires that were like 40's (REAL LOW PROFILE). My dad owns a bodyshop and said it would've needed new shocks, struts, springs, etc. I sold that car tho so that mite be it

Don't know what to tell you, but I have two sets of 16s with good tires. I'd trade you a set for your 17s.

likely to need suspension work either way... 15's or 17's the bigger wheels and tires may make the problem more obvious but if it is driving that bad there will still be problems with the 15's it proy needs shocks and suspension bushings at least.

You definatly need to beef up your suspention a little. Probally a nice set of stiff springs and shocks. Sounds like one of your shocks blew and is sagging to that corner. If not that, if it has a factory sway bar, the bushing(s) could be shot.

looks like a truck with 17s and no lowering...
anyway, whats the tire size spec.. like 205/40zr17? the thinner the tire (the 40 number is the height off the rim) the bouncier it will be. with very low profile tires the sidewalls have to be stiffer to bear the weight of the entire car as opposed to a much larger sidewall which can be very soft. i drove a 96 GS-R with 17s on 205/40zr17s and it had brand new shocks and it was a bouncier ride than my 90 GS with 15s on 195/50r15s with skunk2 2.5" lowering springs |
