Electrical Issues with 91 Blazer

I have a 91 Blazer, S10 Tahoe...great condition, 150,000 KM (93,700 miles)...several issues, wondering if they are related...3-4 days ago several of the instrument lights on the dash started flickering then went dead (tach, gas, oil, bat, temp). The spedometer, odomoter are working. Yesterday it sounded like the alternator was working overtime (could hear loud humming it and "noise" through the radio) and by time I got home, the battery was dead. The battery is about 4 years old, the alternator and belt no more than 2 years old. All connections look solid, no corrosion on the battery at all. The belt is in good condition. Fuses are ok.

I have recharged the battery and started the truck. The dash lights have not returned. Drove the truck for about 30 min and battery was dead again.

It appears the charging system is at fault, and I suspect the battery rather than the alternator. But why would this affect the dash lights?

Any feedback would be great...

Sounds like....

It sounds to me like an open circuit somewhere in the instrument panel. I had a similar problem in a Ford Ranger once. The instrument cluster is a printed circuit, but there are a few wires there. Could be a pinched wire causing the circuit no to ground. Check all connections thoroughly.

Good luck

problem solved

I checked the volts off the battery and there is no change when the car is on or off...so I did a full field test and still no increase in voltage at the battery...yanked the alternator off and had it tested, zero output...alternator is only 3 years old..but was a rebuilt replacement...I'll replace it, but am concerned that alternator failure is but a symptom of some other malaise...thanks for the input

great web site

cheers

RS: Thanks for the reply...I replaced the alternator (which I had to anyway; it was dead) and the fuel, battery, temp, tach and oil guages have not come back on..was hoping is was a voltage problem but I agree it's probably a short ...any idea where the circuit might be located? I assume within the dash board (I hate taking dash board's apart, they never go back together again)..thanks
